Choosing a base in Catania
For a first visit, the area around Via Etnea and Piazza del Duomo keeps the main sights within walking distance: the cathedral, the fish market and the Benedictine monastery. Via Etnea runs roughly 3 km from the cathedral square north towards Mount Etna, and its stops (Piazza Università, Piazza Stesicoro, the entrance to Villa Bellini) make it easy to place a hotel on the map.
Two other bases make sense for specific trips. The seafront by La Playa suits a beach stay in summer. The area around the central station suits you if you rely on buses and trains. For safety and noise on a particular street, recent guest reviews are the better guide. This guide is independent, and the hotels named are examples of locations, not recommendations or partners.

The areas compared
Based on location and transport, not on price. Rates depend on your dates.
| Area | Example | Best for | Check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Via Etnea and the centre | Palace Catania, Via Etnea 218 | Walking to the cathedral, the market and the monastery | Car access and the traffic zone |
| La Playa and Viale Kennedy | Romano Palace, Via Kennedy 28 | A summer stay near the beach | Whether the lido and the rooms are open in your month |
| Central station | – | City buses and regional trains | Your route on the day, since rail works change services |
Distances are the operators' own figures, not walking routes we measured. The hotel lists the cathedral at 750 m and the Benedictine monastery at 1 km. The Romano Palace gives its address on the coastal strip of La Plaja, which is why it serves as an example for a beach location.

Area by area
What each base means in practice.
Via Etnea and the old town
You start every day close to the cathedral and the fish market. The Benedictine monastery, Piazza Stesicoro and Villa Bellini are all on or near the same axis. The old town has a limited traffic zone, which affects arrival by car (see below).
La Playa and Viale Kennedy
This is the seafront base. In summer you can reach the free and paid sections of the beach quickly; see our beaches guide for prices and parking. Check that beach services and the lidos are operating in the month you travel.
Around the central station
Since 11 December 2025, the AMTS city lines that ended at Piazza Borsellino end at the central station. That makes the station a transfer point for the city bus network. This is a transport argument, not a verdict on the area.
Other areas
Borgo, Ognina and San Giovanni Li Cuti are further areas you may see on booking sites. Compare their distance to Via Etnea on a map and read reviews for the street before you book.
Arriving, parking and the traffic zone
Things to ask your hotel before you book.
Catania runs a limited traffic zone (ZTL) in the historic centre and a pedestrian area around Piazza Bellini. The transport company AMTS issues the permits. A hotel garage does not automatically give you the right to enter the zone, so ask the hotel whether it can arrange a permit for your dates. Palace Catania, for example, lists a private garage, but a garage does not confirm access. Do not rely on rules from older sources.
If you drive, public parking is an option. The Famà car park on Via La Spezia (formerly Sanzio) has been paid since 3 June 2025. In the daytime, 07:00 to 20:00, the first 2 hours cost €0.80 an hour, then €0.40 an hour, capped at €4.80. At night, 20:00 to 07:00, the cap is €2. The combined daily maximum is €6.80. The Giuffrida metro station is about 300 m away.
From the airport, the Alibus costs €4 and is valid for 90 minutes. A taxi to Piazza del Duomo or the central station was reported at a €27 flat rate on a trial until 31 December 2026. A city bus ticket costs €1.40, or €2 if you buy it on board. Our airport guide covers rail works and car hire.
Planning day trips from Catania
If you are choosing a base for the wider region.
Catania works as a base for the volcano and the east coast, but the other places have their own accommodation guides. See where to stay near Mount Etna, in Taormina or in Syracuse. For the island as a whole, see where to stay in Sicily. In July and August the mean daily high is above 33 °C, so check what cooling your room has.
Where to stay in Catania: frequently asked questions
What is the best area to stay in Catania?
For a first visit, the centre around Via Etnea and Piazza del Duomo puts the cathedral, the fish market and the monastery in walking distance. A seafront base suits a beach stay in summer.
Is it better to stay near the beach or in the centre?
For sightseeing, the centre. The beach area is better in summer if the beach is the main reason for your trip. Check that the lidos are open in your month.
Can I drive to my hotel in the centre?
Not necessarily. The historic centre has a limited traffic zone with permits issued through AMTS. Ask your hotel whether and how it can arrange access, and do not assume that a garage gives you entry.
Where can I park?
The Famà car park on Via La Spezia costs €0.80 an hour for the first 2 hours by day, then €0.40, up to €4.80. The night rate is capped at €2.
How do I get from the airport to the centre?
By Alibus (€4, valid for 90 minutes) or by taxi. A €27 flat rate to Piazza del Duomo or the central station was reported as a trial until 31 December 2026, so confirm the fare before you get in.
Are the hotels listed here recommendations?
No. Palace Catania and Romano Palace are examples of locations, not endorsements.
