The cathedral and the square
The Duomo di Sant'Agata (Catania Cathedral) stands on Piazza del Duomo, with its baroque façade facing the square. The square is the starting point for most walks in the old town. The fish market is a few steps behind it, and Via Etnea leaves it towards the north.
Catania was rebuilt after the earthquake of 1693. Parts of the city belong to the late baroque towns of the Val di Noto, a UNESCO World Heritage serial site listed in 2002. UNESCO describes specific areas of Catania, not the whole modern municipality. This guide is independent and is not the cathedral's own website.

Visiting hours and rules
Hours are for orientation. They can change, especially around services.
| Day | Morning | Afternoon |
|---|---|---|
| Monday to Saturday | 07:00 to 12:00 | 16:00 to 19:00 |
| Sunday | 07:30 to 12:00 | 16:30 to 19:00 |
These times come from a travel association and carry a note that they may change. The cathedral is a place of worship. Visitors are asked to respect services, to dress appropriately and to switch off mobile phones. Plan your visit for outside the times of services and check the current times on the day.
The cathedral also offers historic guided visits in the evening and in summer. Check the cathedral's own notices for dates before you plan around one.

Piazza del Duomo
In the middle of the square stands the Fontana dell'Elefante, the elephant fountain. The elephant is carved from lava stone and carries an obelisk on its back.
From the square you can walk in several directions. Behind it, the fish market in the lanes around the Amenano fountain. To the north, Via Etnea runs roughly 3 km towards Mount Etna, past Piazza Università and Piazza Stesicoro to the gate of Villa Bellini. The pavement is made with lava material. Our fish market guide explains the market hours.
Mount Etna rises to the north of the city and has its own guide in our network.

Diocesan museum, baths and terraces
Separate tickets from the cathedral. Prices as listed by the operator, 2026.
| Ticket | Adult | Reduced |
|---|---|---|
| Diocesan museum | €7 | €4 |
| Achillian baths (Terme Achilliane) | €5 | €3 |
| Museum and baths together | €10 | €6 |
| Panoramic terraces | – | €3 |
Reduced prices apply to students, Touring Club and FAI members, people over 65, young people aged 10 to 18 and teachers. Bring proof. The museum and the baths are different sites from the terraces, so do not assume that one ticket covers all three. Ask at the ticket desk what your ticket includes.
The museum lists opening hours of Monday to Saturday, 10:00 to 15:00, with an extra afternoon opening from 15:00 to 20:00 on Tuesday and Thursday. The last entry is 30 minutes before closing. Groups of 20 or more can book for Sunday and holidays. Museums publish seasonal timetables, so check the current schedule before you go.
The dome of the neighbouring Badia di Sant'Agata is a separate visit with its own tickets. Do not confuse it with the museum terraces.
