Catania tours: four types to choose from
Most Catania tours fall into four groups: street food and market walks, guided walks through the old town, guided visits of single sights such as the Benedictine monastery, and day trips to Etna, Taormina or Syracuse. This page does not list operators or tour prices for every date, because they change with the season. It helps you decide which type fits and what to look for in a description.
The old town is compact, so the walking tours are the easy ones to add. The day trips are different: you cover long distances, and the bus alternative below is worth comparing.

Types of Catania tours compared
What each type is good for and what to check.
| Type | Best for | Check before booking |
|---|---|---|
| Street food and market walk | First-time visitors who want to taste the city and see La Pescheria with a local | Start time, group size, which dishes and how many drinks are included, diet rules |
| Old town walking tour | Getting your bearings around the cathedral square and Via Etnea | Meeting point, language, whether entry fees are included |
| Guided visit of one sight | The Benedictine monastery, which you see on a guided visit only | Language (Italian or English), reservation, discounts |
| Day trip to Etna, Taormina or Syracuse | Visitors who want a driver and a guide on a long day | Pickup point, entry fees, time at each stop, weather policy |
| On your own by bus or train | Independent travellers who want to choose the day and the pace | Timetables, rail works, the last return connection |
A simple rule: for the city centre, a walking tour pays off on the first morning, while you can easily visit the sights on your own afterwards. For Etna, Taormina and Syracuse, compare the tour with the public transport options below.

What tours usually include, and what to check
Descriptions differ. These points decide whether a tour is good value.
The price is a "from" price
A listed price is often the lowest price, and not every date is available at that price. Check the price for your date and group before you decide.
What is on the plate
On the example street food walk, the operator lists local tastings, a seasonal dessert and three drinks, and says the dishes can change. Do not expect every dish in the description.
Cancellation and diet rules
On the same product page, the free cancellation period is stated differently in two places (24 hours and 3 days for groups), and the vegetarian information is unclear. Read the cancellation rule and ask about your diet before you pay.
Language and start point
The example tour runs in English and meets at Piazza del Duomo at 11:00. Look for the language and the meeting point in every description.
Entry fees
Entry fees are often separate. For comparison, the Roman theatre costs โฌ8 and the Benedictine monastery โฌ10 in 2026, bought direct. The monastery visit is guided, in Italian or English.
Things to do โClosed sights
Castello Ursino is closed for restoration, and the Teatro Massimo Bellini has suspended guided visits since 10 May 2026. A tour that promises the interior of either should be treated with care.
Day trips: tour or public transport?
Journey times and fares reported for 2026. Check the current timetable before you go.
| Destination | By public transport | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Etna (south side) | Bus from Piazza Giovanni XXIII at 8:15 am, arriving at Rifugio Sapienza at 10:30 am. Back at 4:30 pm, in Catania at 6:30 pm. About โฌ6.60 return. | The bus takes you to Rifugio Sapienza only, with no guide or summit access included. Read about hiking and tours on the Etna guide for Catania and Taormina. |
| Taormina | Bus from the airport in 80 to 90 minutes, โฌ7 single and โฌ14 return. About 70 minutes from the city terminal on Via Archimede. | Fares were reported in August 2026. Taormina-Giardini rail station is not the town centre. See Catania to Taormina and the Taormina tours. |
| Syracuse | Replacement buses run from 1 October to 12 December 2026. One example takes about 1 hour 45 minutes between Syracuse and the airport. | Not the same as a direct airport bus. See Catania to Syracuse. |
| Milazzo | Airport bus in about 2 hours, โฌ13 single and โฌ26 return, luggage included. | Ten departures a day from 1 July to 31 October 2026. Buy tickets up to 24 hours before. See getting to Milazzo. |
A tour makes sense when you want hotel pickup, a guide and a fixed programme in one booking. The bus is cheaper and more flexible, but the day is limited by the timetable and the last return connection. More options are on the day trips page.
